I’m writing this quick post for all (including me) who need to remember: you don’t live in order to work, you work in order to live. Our society prizes accomplishment and material wealth above all. As a believer, you are called (and freed!) to live for a set of different priorities. You are called to live as one set apart from the world.
Don’t get me wrong, work is good and a job is a blessing!! God created us to put our hands to the diverse and varying work he’s assigned to each of us. We aren’t created to live lives of leisure… but we also weren’t created for lives dominated by our work.
Instead, we must fight to find a balance between work and home… productivity and relationships… lists and leisure.
Instead of discussing the “perfect set of priorities” and listing ways for how you might get there, this is just a reminder to keep the important things the important things, and to keep the big things the big things.
Jobs come and go, careers fade, and your co-workers will go on in your absence. But when you’re gone from your family, your absence is sorely felt—because in your home you are both loved AND needed.
With every project, promotion, and incentive pulling you every direction, be reminded that your family is the best, longest-lasting, and clearly eternal “work” you could possibly put your hands to. Do so wisely, and do so to the glory of God.
"Jobs come and go, careers fade, and your co-workers will go on in your absence. But when you're gone from your family, your absence is sorely felt."
