The summer slip is real.

A 2020 study found that half (52%) of elementary students lost an average of 40% of their total school-year gains during summer (Atteberry Et Al).

Yet there’s still great hope.

Keep kids reading.

Keep kids practicing math.

Put the onus on them.

This bingo card is one we use with our kids (ages 6, 9, 11) and contains skills we want them to maintain. The incentives at the bottom (ice cream + cash) are how our kids are motivated. If you need to change some boxes, or swap some rewards, do it. Modify for your people.

We’ve found this to be one fun way to keep them learning without adding much work for parents. Kids are excited to get bingos, and yes, for particularly motivated children, we will print another and go again.

We want summer to be fun and carefree and full of all of the good stuff—and also, please don’t forget everything we worked so hard to learn all year.
